Adam's scholarship is a comprehensive review of the applicant's success in education combined with their ability to overcome adversity in their life. It is not based on academic success alone.
Many of the scholarship recipients have been strong students. We've had two valedictorians. Both of them faced significant adversity and demonstrated their ability to overcome it. One faces the challenges of Asberger's syndrome daily and the other lost both parents by the time she was nine years old. One recipient was in a horrible car accident and suffered a challenging brain injury.
Not all our recipients have had such serious adversities that they have fought. We do not consider trying to be a perfect student as a qualifying adverse situation in your life. If you have demonstratable results in the classroom, at home, in your job or in life in general, you should apply for this scholarship.
Additionally, the person(s) submitting the recommendations should detail what they know about the student's adversity. We need more details than describing someone as "a good kid" or a "perfect young person."
The reason we are providing you this information is that we feel bad when the applicant and the individuals feel that they have submitted a strong application and it is not awarded.
We hope that this note is easy to understand. We look forward to many applications.
Sincerely,
Teddy Johnson
Adam's dad.
